Offset Fundamentals
Offset is the distance between the wheel's mounting surface (where it meets the hub) and the wheel's centerline. Positive offset means the mounting surface is closer to the outside face of the wheel — common on modern front-wheel-drive cars. Negative offset means it's closer to the inside — common on deep-dish rear-wheel-drive setups.
Measured in millimeters, offset has a dramatic effect on both aesthetics and function. A 5mm change in offset can mean the difference between perfectly flush fitment and tires that rub the fender — or between clearing your brake calipers and an expensive interference issue.
Finding the Perfect Offset
At Velocity Forged, we don't use generic fitment charts. Every customer's vehicle is individually assessed based on their specific suspension setup, brake package, tire choice, and aesthetic goals. Our fitment database contains over 15,000 vehicle-specific measurements accumulated over a decade of custom builds.
"The perfect offset is a conversation, not a number," says Ryan Nakamura, our senior fitment specialist. "Two identical cars can need different offsets based on how they're used. A track car running 305-section semi-slicks needs different clearances than a street car on 285-section performance tires."
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common mistake we see is customers trying to push offset to the absolute limit of what fits — the "millimeter-perfect" stance. While it looks dramatic in photos, this approach leaves zero margin for tire deflection under cornering loads, suspension compression over bumps, or the slight variations in tire dimensions between brands.
Our recommendation: leave at least 3mm of clearance to the fender and 5mm to suspension components. The car will look fantastic, drive as intended, and you won't be replacing fenders after your first track day.
